What’s Playing, Madison?

“Bleu Shut” is one of three humorous experimental shorts in MMoCA’s Rooftop series this Friday. They can be funny, too!

Thursday

Exhibition: “Munch 150” (7:30p — Eastgate)

In commemoration of Edvard Munch’s 150th birthday, Eastgate is screening a special in-theater exhibition on the life and work of Norway’s favorite painter tonight at 7:30. The Scream totally weirded me out in our kindergarten art class and it’s given me a strange vibe ever since, but I guess that’s as good a compliment as any.

Friday

Rooftop Cinema: Experiments with Space and Time (9:30p — MMoCA’s Rooftop Garden)

“Experiments with Space and Time” features three shorts that find humor in experimental film. If you haven’t yet caught one of MMoCA’s *excellent* Rooftop Events be sure to attend this one as it marks the last of the June screenings. Then again, all signs point to another series come August — that’s no excuse to slouch, slacker. FREE to MMoCA members, and $7 for general admission.

All freakin’ weekend

The Heat (Sundance, AMC Star, Eastgate, Point)

What if buddy cop comedy The Other Guys was redone with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy? What if Bridesmaids director Paul Feig took over for Adam McKay? What if Thomas F. Wilson showed up? What if? Think, McFly.

White House Down (AMC Star, Eastgate, Point)

Add “the White House” to your running Google doc of “S#%* Roland Emmerich has blown up.” On Tuesday, I tried to get into Sundance’s advance screening of Channing Tatum protecting President Jamie Foxx, and forty minutes beforehand the line had already doubled back on itself. People love them some C-Tates n’ J-Foxx. There’s probably a better band name in there somewhere.

Ambikapathy (Raanjhanaa(AMC Star)

A Bollywood love story about a persistent Hindu Brahmin man who woos the girl of his dreams, a Muslim. Director Aanand L Rai has already received praise from global audiences. Ambikapathy also features original music scored by the “Mozart of Madras” composer A.R. Rahman, a man whose lengthy resume already includes Elizabeth: The Golden Age and award-winning work on Slumdog Millionaire. That might be important to note considering Bollywood movies occasionally drop in a song or two.

Oh, and starting this Friday, Jefferson’s Highway 18 Drive-In switches out Oz: The Great and Powerful for Iron Man 3 in their Monsters University Double Feature. Movie starts at sundown, y’all.

Monday

Muppets from Space (9:00p — Memorial Union Terrace)

The year 1999 finally answered that age old question of ‘Are Muppets alone in the universe?’ The answer, at least according to Muppets from Space, was a resounding ‘Waka waka waka.’ Join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Fozzie Bear as they follow a myterious alien race in search of Gonzo the Great’s past. The FREE fuzzy fun begins at the Union Terracce at 9:00 and features appearances from the likes of F. Murray Abraham, Jeffrey Tambor, Andie MacDowell, Kathy Griffin, and Hulk Hogan. Excuse me, “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan.

Wednesday

Despicable Me 2 (Sundance, AMC Star, Eastgate, Point)

Guess who’s back-back-back / Back again-gain-gain / Gru is back-back-back / with Russell Brand-Brand-Brand

Steve Carell’s villain-turned-reluctant hero is recruited by Kirsten Wiig and the Anti-Villain League to thwart the plans of a new baddie, despicable or otherwise. Gru’s mischievous little minions sure seem popular with audiences; they’ve also got their own movie coming out next year. Maybe their cute factor distracted everyone from asking what the heck an Eminem song is doing in a trailer for a kid’s movie.

The Lone Ranger (Sundance, AMC Star, Eastgate, Point)

Gore Verbinski’s latest Disney-backed foray into summer action doesn’t come by way of another Pirates sequel, though Johnny Depp’s Tonto comes along for the ride anyway in The Lone Ranger. The title role goes to Armie Hammer. Remember Armie Hammer as the “Winklevii” in The Social NetworkThis time, he’s 6’5″, 220, and there’s one of him.
