What’s Playing, Madison?

Jodorowsky's Dune Madison Wisconsin

Thursday

“Cinematic Vision:” A Student Short Film Showcase (6:30p — Central Madison Library, Rm 302)

LakeFront Cinema at the Madison Library goes “green” with Wisconsin filmmaking this month. With the help of UW-Madison’s (and LakeFront Cinema alum) Aaron Granat, we’ve curated a special presentation of some the best and brightest young filmmakers making exciting experimental, documentary and narrative cinema here in Madison — and outside it, too. Hamidreza Nassiri’s “Daylight News” was shot entirely in Tehran and makes its U.S. premiere in our fair city tonight. Neat, huh? And FREE.

All freakin’ weekend

Jodorowsky’s Dune (Sundance)

Imagine an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic with the music of Pink Floyd, the macabre design of H.R. Giger, and the gravitas of Orson Welles. Now imagine never getting to see it. Director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s career renaissance begins here, with a documentary on the 2001 that never was.

Need further incentive? Madison Film Forum is heading to the spice planet on “Movie Tuesday.”

Maleficent (Sundance, AMC Star, Point, Eastgate)

Everyone knows Maleficent was the evil fairy who wanted nothing but the worst for Sleeping Beauty. What this live-action re-imagining presupposes is… maybe she didn’t?

A Million Ways to Die in the West (Sundance, AMC Star, Eastgate)

“From the guy” that brought you Family Guy, Ted, and that comedy-western that’s drawn the ire of critics for a boilerplate story and fart jokes… comes that comedy-western that’s drawn the ire of critics for a boilerplate story and fart jokes.
