With the likes of the Cinematheque and WUD Film taking a well-earned winter break, Madison belongs to the marquee releases this week.
Now playing
The Wolf of Wall Street (Sundance, AMC Star, Point, Eastgate)
It almost didn’t make it out of the editing booth in 2013, but Martin Scorsese’s latest is a frenzied three-hour adaptation of stock swindler Jordan Belfort’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) memoir. Co-starring Jonah Hill, Kyle Chandler, and Quaaludes.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (AMC Star, Point)
Idris Elba stars as the recently deceased South African revolutionary in this biopic, chronicling Nelson Mandela’s early life, world-changing politics, and his 27-year imprisonment before being elected president in 1994.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Sundance, AMC Star, Point, Eastgate)
Ben Stiller returns to the director’s chair in a dreamy adaptation of James Thurber’s short story about an absent-minded office drone (Stiller) who disappears into his day dreams.
47 Ronin (AMC Star, Point, Eastgate)
Originally slated for a November 2012 release, Universal Pictures’ samurai action film was then bumped to February 2013. It’s finally out in December and stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Keanu Reeves, who plays an escaped slave that joins the leaderless samurai in avenging their master’s death.
Grudge Match (AMC Star, Point, Eastgate)
Two retired boxers put on one last match in this sports comedy. It’s De Niro vs. Stallone, Raging Bull vs. Rocky… Alan Arkin vs. Kevin Hart?
Believe (AMC Star, Point, Eastgate)
Named for the pop star’s latest album, Believe looks at Bieber’s rise to success in a documentary that needs to be seen to beliebe.
