July 24: LakeFrontRow Cinema presents The Short Films of Phantom Moth Productions

This Thursday July 24th at the Central Library, LakeFrontRow.com and the Madison Public Library present films from Madison’s Nicolas Alexander and Phantom Moth Productions.

Over the past two years, writer-director Alexander has gathered local, multi-talented artists for his guerrilla production troupe including cinematographer Evan Parquette and hip-hop musician/actor Carlos Christian. Fresh off the success of their short film “The Harbor” at the 48 Hour Film Festival, Alexander and Christian spoke with me about their prolific output and minimalist approach to filmmaking.

The films of Phantom Moth Productions can be aggressive and swift in their retribution, but even the darkest stories are not without a pathos and beauty, often shown through Parquette’s gorgeous cinematography.

The evening’s showcase will feature four short films:

  • Alexander’s early work in “Keep Movin'” and “Runnin'” situate biographical elements from Christian’s life inside of pulp crime fiction stories
  • “The Harbor,” which took home awards for acting and cinematography and won runner-up for “Best Film” at this year’s 48 Hour Film Festival, combines a disabled man’s charming love story with grounded science-fiction
  • “The Armed Robbery on 44th Street” toys with perspective as its criminals in hiding recall the details of a heist gone wrong

Nicolas Alexander, Evan Parquette, and Carlos Christian will also attend the screening for a Q&A after the show.

  • Admission is FREE. Doors open at 6:00p. Films start at 6:30p in Rm 302.
