All freakin’ weekend
Palo Alto (Sundance)
A story about high schoolers and their run-ins with drugs, violence, and casual sex. The bad news might be that this drama is based off a 2010 short story collection by James Franco. The good news is that there’s another Coppola making movies.
Chef (Sundance, Point)
After the box office disappointment Cowboys & Aliens, Jon Favreau makes his next project a small one. How small? Small enough to fit the food truck of his disgraced chef’s career revamp. Co-starring Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo and those people from Iron Man 2.
Belle (Sundance)
A British naval officer’s illegitimate mixed-race daughter returns to England to deal with 18th century prejudices, Sarah Gadon’s brow line, and a damn good original score from Rachel Portman.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (Sundance, AMC Star, Point, Eastgate)
You don’t have to worry about whether the inferior version of Magneto or superior version of Professor X is in this one, because they all are! Bryan Singer’s return to the X-Men juggernaut features time travel, multiple selves, and old man Logan. And really, isn’t aging Wolverine why we keep going to these in the first place?
Manam (AMC Star)
This comedy drama about reincarnation and love is also prolific Telugu actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao’s final role.
Kochadaiiyaan (Point)
A veritable Tamil version of latter day Robert Zemeckis motion-capture, Rajinikanth stars as not one, not two, but three separate characters. Jim Carrey, eat your heart out.
Blended (AMC Star, Point, Eastgate)
After The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore can’t seem to stop falling in love. Following an awkward first encounter, the pair grow fond of one another while staying at an African resort.
Friday
Blended + Godzilla (6:30p — Highway 18 Drive-In; 7:40p — Sky-Vu Drive-In)
And if a double feature weren’t enough, Highway 18 has another double feature in X: The Friend From Beyond Space and The Wall People on Friday and Saturday. Is that enough movie for you sickos? (All times listed are for box office openings.)
In the Name Of (7:00p — Alicia Ashman Library)
Rumors abound concerning a personable priest’s sexuality in this Polish drama. Alicia Ashman’s “Best of the Fests” series is always FREE.
The Goonies (8:00p — Peace Park)
Richard Donner’s summer classic The Goonies plays FREE in that little grass inlet off of State Street. “Moonlight Movies” are back! Well, technically they’ve been back since April. But it’s warm out now. Shut up.
Saturday
Blended + Godzilla (6:30p — Highway 18 Drive-In; 7:40p — Sky-Vu Drive-In)
Sunday
Blended + Godzilla (6:30p — Highway 18 Drive-In; 7:40p — Sky-Vu Drive-In)
Monday
Blended + Godzilla (8:00p — Highway 18 Drive-In)
Ghostbusters (9:00p — Memorial Union Terrace)
I know we’re nowhere close to Halloween but WUD Film’s Lakeside movies just make me wanna dance! FREE.
Tuesday
Blended + Godzilla (8:00p — Highway 18 Drive-In)
Wednesday
Back to the Future (1:30p, 7:00p — Sundance)
You know, I’ve ripped Sundance’s definition of a “classic” plenty of times in this space. This one’s actually pretty heavy, Doc.
Makers (6:30p — Central Madison Library, Rm 302)
YWCA-Madison and the Madison Public Library co-present this look at how women have shaped the course of history. Snacks and door prizes included. FREE.
Blended + Godzilla (8:00p — Highway 18 Drive-In)
