Your Weekly Short: ‘Son of a Gun’

Welcome to “Your Weekly Short,” a LakeFrontRow.com feature that showcases one short from a Wisconsin filmmaker all while stretching the definition of “weekly.” Brace thy face.

I suppose there’s some kind of fetid, armpit poetry to be found in disc golf, but “Son of a Gun” mercifully avoids looking for any grace in the pseudo-sport in favor of frolf’s bare essentials: dudes throwin’ discs. That mulleted crudeness manifests itself in frolf legend Lucas “The Gun” Gunderson, whose antics include such lofty heights as grinding on basket chains and throwing half-assed temper tantrums. He’s also got some wicked frolf chops and thankfully, “The Gun” would only pass his talents on to his son, Chaz (Ryan Spiering), the subject of “Son of a Gun” and its faux documentary style.

Milwaukee held its own 48 Hour Film Festival this past weekend (winning films will be screened on June 30 at the Downer Theater) and Spiering’s entry captures more of the crude bro humor that likely made audiences fall in love with last year’s “Time Bros.” Dick jokes and Ghostbusters references abound, but Spiering makes the loved ones in Chaz’s life caricatures rather than people, amplifying both Chaz’s comeback trail and his talent for hitting chains with small frisbees. (Think of ghost dad here as the frolf corollary to Field of Dreams.)

So when Chaz’s girlfriend and over-the-top cheerleader (Maya Norman) performs her victory celebration, it seems plausible that Chazzie really is this good and that Norman’s excitement is only partially because of the wine spilling from her glass.
